About

A Collegiate Recovery Center (CRC) is a designated program which serves students in recovery from addiction. It is a university-provided, supportive environment within the campus culture that reinforces the decision to engage in a lifestyle of recovery from substance use. It is designed to provide peer led and peer organized recovery support along side academic experience to ensure that students do not have to sacrifice their recovery or education for the other.

The goal of a CRC is to offer the chance for students in recovery from addiction to experience the opportunities that higher education offers both in the college environment and after by providing support, preventing a return to use, and promoting academic performance. In coordination with prevention programs, secondary supports such as collegiate recovery programs respond to the need to support the recovering college student and to increase access to treatment and services for the student still in active addiction.

According to the Association of Recovery in Higher Education (2019), approximately 88% of the students who participate in these programs maintain their recovery.

CRC programs transform the lives of recovering students, diversify the student population, provide innovative programming for the campus and contribute to serving and connecting the university and local community. They also increase retention of students and direct tuition revenue.

The most essential elements to a successful CRC are university- dedicated staff, a physical dedicated space on campus, recovery protection services, and a community of students in recovery to offer peer support.

Mission Statement

The UNM Collegiate Recovery Center is dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive community where students in recovery can flourish academically, socially, and personally. Through culturally informed programs, peer support, and educational resources, we empower students to build resilience, embrace wellness, and celebrate recovery as a foundation for success.

Vision Statement

We envision a campus where recovery is celebrated, integrated, and supported as a vital part of student life. Our goal is to ensure that every student in recovery has the opportunity to thrive and make meaningful contributions to their communities. By bridging the gap between recovery, education, and cultural understanding, we aim to be a community leader in collegiate recovery, inspiring a future where recovery is embraced with compassion and pride.
